For anyone who’s managed a dev team, let alone a dev team working on shared code over remote connections, variable names can easily be the difference between a successful project and a runaway nightmare.  Your best bet is normally to let your lead programmer set out rules to the team soon as they come on board to the project and ensure the team knows that changing variable names even into the project for clarity sake is never frowned upon.

The importance of paired programming here should be noted, but a different topic.

However, I came across this article which is a GREAT intro document that sets everyone on a similar page when it comes to variable names.  You may even want to include something like this as part of your Dev-Intro package when someone transitions into a project.
